It pains me to say this, but the back to school season is here after only a few short months. Although I’m not too excited about doing homework every night, I am ready to update my wardrobe for the school year.
The most important thing to tackle before you go back to school is your messy closet! I know, I know. Decluttering your closet is time-consuming, but it’s totally worth it. The first thing I do when getting rid of clothes is try everything on. If something doesn’t fit, I get rid of it. You want your clothes to be flattering, so only keep things that make you feel good! Next, I will donate anything that I’m not completely drawn to. If I don’t have the desire to wear something, then it has to go. Lastly, I give away anything that I haven’t worn in the past 4-8 months. Even if I like the way something looks, if it doesn’t work for my personal style, there’s no need to keep it. By this time, I have already gotten rid of dozens of unnecessary things in my closet and dressers. That’s pretty much it! After these three steps, I finally have space in my wardrobe!

Building a wardrobe that fits your style is incredibly important all year round, but especially during the school year. Once you have space in your closet, you can pick up a few new things to keep your wardrobe feeling fresh.
I always start with the basics when I’m going back to school. A neutral colored sweater is always key for fall fashion. When it’s still hot out, you can throw a sweater on with some shorts, and when it’s cold you can wear some jeans and booties. My most worn sweater is definitely my grey turtleneck from Forever 21. It looks a lot more expensive than it actually was, which is a plus. White and grey t-shirts are great for layering with jackets in the colder months, or dressing down with sweatpants. And the perfect-fitting jeans are always a wardrobe essential. Although I haven’t found my go-to pair yet, I wear my American Eagle jeans almost everyday. What’s great about basics is that you don’t need too many of them, because you can accessorize differently every time you wear them to create a different look!
While basic clothing is a must-have, it’s also super fun to pick up some trendy clothes for the fall time. Animal prints have been all the rage lately. I have to be honest… animal prints used to intimidate me. They just seemed so bold! However, there are so many small ways you can incorporate this trend into your outfits. My favorite is an animal print scarf which I tie through my belt loops to add a small pop of trendiness. I love wrapping scarves around my waist because it adds a lot to a t-shirt and jeans. I also LOVE culottes. I have a feeling that these will be a trend for a long time because they are just so practical and cute. I have been wearing these black culottes from Shein nonstop, with graphic tees, blouses, and tank tops. When it gets a little chillier, you can throw a denim or leather jacket over, to add even more to the outfit. Although these culotte pants have been a trend, they have a classic look to them and can be worn with almost any style.
Obviously the start of school doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to go out and spend a lot of money on new clothes. If you look around your closet a little, you will realize that you already own some of these pieces. But when you are shopping, always look for the back to school sales. And remember!! You can update your wardrobe even if you aren’t going back to school. There’s never a bad time to do a closet clear out (and buy new clothes). 🙂
